A bathroom can look perfectly finished on day one and still develop soft spots, swollen seams, cracked paint, or mould staining later. The difference is often hidden behind the paint and tile. Choosing the best drywall for bathroom walls means looking at where water and steam actually land, not simply selecting the greenest board at the building supply store.

For most bathroom renovations in British Columbia, there is no single drywall product that belongs everywhere. A powder room, a main bath with a fan, and a tiled walk-in shower have very different moisture demands. The right approach is to use moisture-resistant drywall where it makes sense, and a proper tile backer and waterproofing system where regular drywall should never be asked to perform.

What is the best drywall for bathroom walls?

For bathroom walls outside the shower or tub surround, moisture-resistant gypsum board is usually the practical choice. Often called green board, this drywall has a treated gypsum core and moisture-resistant facing designed to handle the higher humidity common in bathrooms. It finishes much like regular drywall, so it is a good fit for painted walls, toilet areas, vanity walls, and sections of the room that see steam but not direct water.

Mould-resistant drywall is another good option, especially in bathrooms with limited natural ventilation, recurring condensation, or a history of moisture concerns. These products are made to resist mould growth better than standard drywall, but they are not waterproof. They still need a properly working exhaust fan, sound plumbing, and good installation practices.

Inside a shower enclosure or around a tub that will be tiled, cement board or an approved tile backer system is the better choice. Direct spray and standing moisture are too much for gypsum-based drywall, including moisture-resistant board. The backer board must also be paired with the correct waterproofing membrane or system. Tile and grout are decorative finishes, not a complete waterproof barrier.

Match the wall board to each bathroom zone

The most reliable bathroom wall assemblies are planned by zone. It is a simple decision that prevents expensive repairs behind tile later.

Painted walls outside wet areas

Moisture-resistant drywall is typically a strong choice for the walls around a vanity, toilet, doorway, and open floor space. It gives painters and finishers a smooth surface while offering more protection than standard drywall when the room gets humid after a shower.

If the bathroom is well ventilated and has no direct water exposure, standard drywall may be permitted and can perform adequately. Still, many homeowners choose moisture-resistant board for the added peace of mind. The material upgrade is modest compared with opening a finished wall after moisture damage has appeared.

Shower and tub surrounds

Use cement board, foam board, or another manufacturer-approved tile backer system in areas that receive direct water. This includes shower walls, tub surrounds with a shower head, and niches. The exact material matters less than using a complete compatible system installed according to its requirements.

A common mistake is installing green board behind tile and assuming the tile will protect it. Small failures in caulking, grout, plumbing, or waterproofing can let moisture reach the board. Over time, gypsum products can soften and lose their integrity. A proper backer board and waterproofing layer give the assembly a much better chance of staying dry where it counts.

Half walls, splash zones, and backsplashes

A tiled backsplash behind a vanity is not the same as a shower wall. Moisture-resistant drywall may be appropriate behind a backsplash where the area only receives occasional splashes. However, if a wall is part of a wet-room layout, receives frequent direct spray, or sits beside an open shower, treat it as a wet area and use a proper waterproofed backer system.

Do not forget the bathroom ceiling

Bathroom ceilings take a steady dose of warm, rising moisture. For that reason, moisture-resistant drywall is often a sensible choice overhead, particularly in a full bath used daily. In rooms with wider joist spacing or areas prone to humidity, a thicker or sag-resistant ceiling board may be worth considering.

The installation matters as much as the board. Ceiling drywall needs correct fastening, proper framing support, clean taping, and a paint system suited to bathrooms. Poorly fastened sheets can sag, and weak joints may crack as framing moves through seasonal changes.

An exhaust fan that vents outdoors is also part of the ceiling strategy. Even the best board cannot compensate for a bathroom that holds humid air for hours. The fan should be sized for the room and used long enough after bathing to clear lingering moisture. If mirrors stay fogged well after a shower, the ventilation may need attention.

Green board versus mould-resistant drywall

Green board remains a familiar name, but not every moisture-resistant drywall is the same. Some products focus mainly on moisture resistance, while others offer mould resistance and more durable facings. The best choice depends on the room, the ventilation, and the planned finish.

For a standard family bathroom with a reliable fan, moisture-resistant drywall on painted walls is usually enough. For a basement bathroom, a poorly ventilated ensuite, or a home that has previously dealt with condensation, mould-resistant drywall can be a worthwhile upgrade. It is especially useful where a wall backs onto a cooler exterior area and temperature differences can contribute to surface condensation.

Neither option is a fix for a leak. If plumbing drips inside a wall, a shower valve fails, or roof and exterior moisture gets into the structure, the source must be repaired. Moisture-resistant drywall buys time and reduces risk under normal conditions. It does not make water damage harmless.

Finishing details that protect the finished bathroom

A bathroom wall can have the correct board and still fail early if the finishing is rushed. Drywall joints should be properly taped and coated, corners should be straight and protected, and penetrations around plumbing should be planned carefully. Good finishing is what makes painted walls look clean under vanity lighting, where every ripple and joint line becomes noticeable.

For tile areas, keep the drywall finishing materials out of the waterproofed assembly unless the selected system specifically calls for them. Cement board joints, fasteners, corners, niches, and transitions need the right tape, mortar, sealant, and membrane details. Mixing products from different systems without confirming compatibility is a gamble that is difficult to correct once the tile is installed.

It also helps to think ahead about transitions. A clean line where tile meets painted drywall, a properly supported shower niche, and a straight ceiling-to-wall corner make the room feel finished rather than patched together. These are small details, but they are exactly where experienced drywall and finishing work shows.

When standard drywall is not the best value

Standard drywall is less expensive, easy to source, and suitable for many dry interior spaces. In a bathroom, though, the savings can be short-lived if the room has poor ventilation or frequent use. A basic guest powder room is one situation where standard drywall may be perfectly reasonable, because there is no shower and very little humidity.

A busy main bathroom is different. It may see multiple showers, wet towels, steamy baths, and regular cleaning. In that setting, choosing moisture-resistant drywall for dry sections and a waterproofed backer system for wet sections is a more durable use of the renovation budget.

Use moisture-resistant drywall on painted bathroom walls and ceilings where there is humidity but no direct water exposure. Upgrade to mould-resistant drywall if ventilation is limited or the space has a higher condensation risk. In showers, tub surrounds, and other direct-spray zones, install a proper tile backer board with a complete waterproofing system.

That combination gives homeowners a sensible balance of cost, finish quality, and long-term protection. It also keeps each material in the job it was designed to do.
